Jorge Castro (AR)

The landscapes in the videos of the Kuninkaankatu 24 window installation NEARBY LANDSCAPE were shot with a drone in the surroundings of the artist's home town. With this work, Castro wants to introduce us to his own environment, which he highlights with abstract colour compositions. Córdoba is located in the centre of Argentina, 1000 km from the sea, surrounded by rich natural resources, beautiful mountains, rivers and lakes. Their aesthetics have a positive effect on artists, but Jorge Castro is concerned that while the mountain nature is exuberantly beautiful, people are not taking proper care of it, and in Latin society the circular economy is not working.

Born in 1967, Jorge Castro aka Fisternni, is one of the pioneers of electronic arts in Argentina. He is currently working on a series of video installation pieces of stories or urban stories where he tries to capture the magic of the moment and its small media poetry through video or sounds. Technopolitics and trying to stop time is part of the focus of his work and passion with these constructions that curiously become more and more analogous.

During his years of residence in the United States he obtained a Master in Digital Arts at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). He has participated in festivals, biennials and exhibitions of electronic music and visual arts in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, United States, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland , Germany and Australia.

Since 1994 he has worked on his own record label Sudamerica Electronica and also publishes on netlabels such as Audiotong, Pueblo Nuevo or Sincro. He also served as curator of Contemporary Art Centers such as Museo Caraffa / Chateau Carreras, CAC / Museo Genaro Perez of the city of Córdoba in Argentina. He is also a cultural manager and event producer, bringing international artists to the city, such as Alva Noto, Byetone, Jacob Kirkegaard, Pink Twins, Dave Phillips, Zbigniew Karkowski, Alberto Novello among others.

Since 2007, Jorge Castro has directed La Cúpula, art gallery and medialab, where he regularly organises exhibitions, concerts and residencies for foreign artists. The space is located in Castro's hometown of Córdoba and is also the headquarters of the Sudamerica Electronica Civil Association. It was opened out of a need for a group of artists to have an independent technological production centre for art and a space for various events.

Castro also directs the Santo Noise Sound Art sound and experimental music festival and is currently Professor of the Multimedia Production Chairs at the Provincial University of Cordoba UPC-FAD.
