Residency July
Maria Kananen (FI)

Dance Artist Maria Kananen is working in RaumArs residence with her Kehokätköilyä
community dance piece that invites people of all ages both together and individually to pause for listening, presence and bodily experience. Dance piece is built from simple exercises that can be explored during 10.-30.7.2021 on control points across the central area of Rauma as well as on the mariakananen.com/kehokatkoilya

Control points are published on the Fine Arts Day on 10 July. During the day Maria will be sharing information about the community dance piece and doing movement improvisations based on Kehokätköilyä exercises in the city and various venues.

Kehokätköilyä is realised in cooperation with RaumArs ry, City of Rauma and Regional Dance Center in Western Finland.

Maria Kananen is an Espoo based freelance dance artist and a member of the artist group FREEcollective. She has been extensively active in the domestic dance field since 2000 in the diverse positions of dancer, choreographer, director, producer and event arranger. Kananen also has
further education in the fields of dance movement therapy, music and art therapy, and occupational therapy.

Kananen’s art arises through interactions with different people and environments. For her the role as an artist can be, for example, the realisation of some particular things or enabling another way of experiencing or different ways of being for various groups and individuals. At the centre of Kananen's interest are the communal forms of dance art making, as well as improvisation, the powerful and delicate art of presence and interaction.
