May. On Sunday, May 3rd at 10:00 a.m., the service at the Holy Cross Church of Rauma will conclude with a performance of the composition Another Fantasia on "Greensleeves" by Indian music professor Kedarnath Awati. The performance is being organized in collaboration with the Rauma parish. Leena Kivi on the organ and Katriina Karvinen on the piano.
Composed and arranged by Kedarnath Awati for organ and piano in the fall of 2025, this approximately 8-minute-long set of variations is based on the old folk melody Greensleeves, which William Shakespeare himself referenced in his works. Awati drew inspiration for this new version from the orchestral version, Fantasia on Greensleeves, by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) and the compositions of Peter Tranchell (1922–1993).
Numerous well-known musicians have created their own versions of it or performed it, including Leonard Cohen, Enya, Marianne Faithfull, The Scorpions, and Ritchie Blackmore, as well as, in Finnish under the title Sait multa kukkaset toukokuun, artists such as Anneli Sari and Reijo Taipale.
Kedarnath Awati will be working at the RaumArs artist residency in May and will visit Hj. Nortamo School, among other places, to talk about Indian music.
